Millinery

Maybe sounds are indifferent to hearing,
but a listener needs sounds,
cannot live without them.
Not just content experiencing them,
a listener covets and collects sounds.
Some accumulate the artefacts.
Others, like me, collect them as words.
I place words on sounds like hats.
Sounds have no real need
for shade or formal attire
but, like ghosts or the invisible man,
they can only be seen when clothed.
I hang words on sounds
so I can grasp them better.
And because my mother was a milliner.
